Wellness is a broad concept that entails many aspects of life, and the idea may be thought of quite differently from one person to another.  It inspires ideas such as self-care, healthy styles of living, and making choices that are in concert with a particular type of outcome.  Tools for wellness come in many forms and may have varying suitability for individuals depending on personal preferences and attributes, current circumstances, goals, needs, ability, and one’s motivation to apply such tools.  One wellness tool that is highly versatile, cost effective, and useful for many aspects of wellness is journaling.

One may ask: exactly how does journaling and/or writing impact wellness?  Researchers have demonstrated positive outcomes as a result of journaling and writing; improvements have been confirmed in the following areas: mental health, cognitive benefits, emotional wellness, physical health, relational health and overall personal growth.  Writing can be used as a tool for organizing thoughts, processing and expressing emotions, increasing self-awareness, reducing stress, improving memory and fostering creativity.  It also supports healthier immune function and wellness outcomes.  In addition to this, it can provide an avenue for self-development in terms of fostering desirable habits, supporting life-changes and cultivating desired outcomes.

Journaling can be thought of as transformative, beneficial, valuable and healing exercise.  It may prove to be instrumental, relieving, and challenging as an endeavor of exploration.  It allows for the creation of a sacred space that is purely for the writer.  He or she determines the pace, style, content, and direction word by word and page by page.  A journal can be likened to a blank canvas in the hands of an artist on the cusp of creative self-expression.  The result is in the hands of the writer and the process may prove to be surprising as the experience of journaling can allow for an unfolding which may be unforeseen.  Engaging in journaling can ultimately be freeing and cultivating as the journey unfolds step by step.  The act of acknowledging, expressing, and articulating thoughts and feelings can serve as a powerful force in the process of self-exploration and increasing in the understanding of oneself.  The experience can be a journey in and of itself as it can help bring about new insights and an increase in self-awareness along the way.  You are likely to benefit more from the experience of journaling if you can do it consistently, honestly, purposefully, and with a sense of safety related to the process you have established.  Self-acceptance and self-compassion are also positive ingredients to add to your journaling experience.  Give yourself the space you need to express yourself freely and allow yourself to be open to what you can learn in the process.  If you feel significant discomfort or distress in response to the idea of journaling or by journaling about certain topics, it may be useful to give yourself time and space as needed, and to also consider seeking out therapeutic support.

The options for journaling topics and orientations are vast.  What may be a great purpose for journaling for you during this season of life?  Journaling topics may include self-expression, faith, problems/concerns, work, feelings, personal growth, identification of patterns, mental health, gratitude, self-care, habits, relationships, and/or goals. The focus of journaling may shift depending on one’s mindset, development, and personal aspirations.  It may be beneficial to also define or outline a plan for engaging in the process of journaling.  Below are some questions that may be helpful to consider:

How do you feel about journaling?

How do you think journaling will affect you?

What is your desired outcome, need, or intention with journaling?

What type of journaling format may work well for you?

What supportive resources do I want to include or utilize?

What journaling routine is realistic for you?

Where are good places for you to engage in journaling?

Where do you plan to store your journal for safe-keeping?
